The mysterious death of Father John Maina, a well-known priest from Igwamiti Parish in Nyahururu, has sparked an intense investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Father Maina was found injured and unconscious by a boda boda rider along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway. His final moments remain clouded in mystery.
On May 15, 2025, the motorcycle rider came across Father Maina near the Diatomite stage. He was visibly bruised and bleeding. Before losing consciousness, the priest reportedly told the rider that he had been abducted from Nyahururu—a statement that has raised serious concerns among investigators.
The rider rushed him to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Father Maina passed away shortly after being admitted.
Preliminary autopsy results ruled out head injuries as the cause of death, prompting doctors to conduct further toxicology tests to uncover the exact cause.
Authorities say Father Maina had recently come under pressure from unidentified individuals who allegedly demanded a share of funds he received after a major church event attended by top political leaders.
There are also unconfirmed reports that the priest feared for his life before his death, although no formal complaint had been made.
