Public Service CS Justin Muturi Ruku has sparked controversy after issuing a stern warning over what he described as rising political arrogance among a section of Kikuyu leaders allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Speaking during a public forum, Ruku cautioned that confrontational politics and ethnic-based hostility risk deepening divisions rather than advancing national unity.
Ruku rejected narratives that portray the Kikuyu community as the sole group that sacrificed during the struggle against colonial rule, arguing that many other communities also endured hardship and fought for independence. He stressed that no single community holds a monopoly on sacrifice or patriotism, warning against the use of history to assert political superiority over others.
The CS further criticized what he termed as deliberate attacks and disrespect directed at Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, saying such actions were unacceptable, especially considering the support extended to Kikuyu leaders who currently hold senior government positions. He maintained that criticism should be issue-based and respectful, not personalized or framed along ethnic lines.
Ruku’s remarks have drawn mixed reactions, with some supporters viewing them as a pushback against political arrogance, while critics argue that the language used risks inflaming ethnic tensions. The incident has reignited debate on the role of leaders in promoting unity and responsible speech, particularly at a time when political temperatures are rising and ethnic sensitivities remain high in Kenya’s political landscape.
