Lei Cheng, also known as Charlie, is the owner of the Chinese Square located in Unicity mall at Kenyatta University. According to Cheng, his business is thriving, and he has confirmed this fact. In a recent interview with Nation, Cheng disclosed that he launched his shop on January 29, 2023, and within two weeks, he had made an astounding sale of Sh20 million.
The Chinese Square has become the talk of the town, and it’s now making the same two-week amount within just two days, even on its slowest days. This incredible success has been made possible by the massive support of thousands of Kenyans who flock to the shop daily for various products and services.
Cheng revealed that he was motivated to start the business after discovering that essential products were being sold at exorbitant prices in local supermarkets. He aimed to provide Kenyans with basic products at reasonable prices, and this inspired him to start the Chinese Square. Cheng reiterated that he followed all the legal processes and government directives in setting up his business.
“My business is legal and is focused on fair competition. We followed all government procedures to establish the business in Kenya, and we are here to disrupt monopolies,” Cheng said.
He noted that his market strategy has played a significant role in attracting customers to his shop, and he feels that his business is being unfairly targeted. The Chinese Square is less than a month old, but on a bad day, the business still manages to sell goods worth Sh10 million.
