Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged residents of the Mt Kenya region to stop supporting musicians who recently visited Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The meeting, which took place on Friday, brought together several prominent musicians from the region. According to Kindiki, the session aimed to address issues affecting the creative industry, particularly the exploitation of artists by cartels.
“The creative industry is a multibillion-shilling business. Constant engagement with performing artists and all stakeholders is crucial to finding ways of supporting them through policy reforms and protection of intellectual property rights,” said Kindiki.
During the meeting, some of the artists also expressed their appreciation for the government’s new Social Health Insurance Fund, which they claimed had benefited them.
However, Gachagua has criticized the move, labeling it a betrayal of the Mt Kenya community. He called on local residents to stop listening to the music of those who attended the meeting.
“Those who went to seek forgiveness from Ruto — if they don’t clarify their actions — I will advise people not to listen to their music. Clubs and entertainment joints should avoid inviting them to perform,” Gachagua stated.
He further alleged that one of the musicians had falsely accused him of denying them a political opportunity. Gachagua dismissed the claims and questioned the qualifications of the artist involved.
