A video has emerged online featuring a French YouTuber who appears to have fallen victim to exploitation when he visited a food joint in Kibera to enjoy Ugali Matumbo. The establishment’s owner informed him that the meal cost Ksh 1000.
After some friendly banter, the French YouTuber handed over Ksh 500 to the owner. Surprisingly, the owner insisted on an additional Ksh 200 to settle the entire bill. Despite the white man, identified as Kino Yves, maintaining a cheerful demeanor, he acknowledged that the price seemed inflated. He decided to wait and observe if others would be charged similarly.
The owner of the food joint remained adamant, asserting that he charged everyone the same amount. Perplexed by the situation, the YouTuber left, realizing he was being taken advantage of by the establishment.
In a video on his YouTube channel, Kino Yves shared his experience, stating, “I walk around Kibera, the second biggest slum in Africa, in Nairobi, Kenya. I meet some friendly people, and after struggling to arrange my lunch, I find myself in a weird situation… the man at a restaurant asks me for a ridiculously high price for ugali, the cheapest food in Kenya. Then, I keep walking around, meeting some nice and some strange people. What a place it is!”
However, netizens expressed displeasure in the comment section, criticizing the YouTuber for portraying a negative image of Kenyans. One commenter remarked, “I have always said, our leaders are a reflection of who we are. We have normalized dishonesty… just disgusting.” Another netizen lamented, “We are mad at corrupt politicians, then when we get an opportunity, we steal and employ our relatives.” An online user condemned the act, stating, “Taking advantage of people without an iota of shame. Disgusting.”
The incident, captured in a video shared on social media, depicted Kibera’s “Kibandaski” overcharging the French YouTuber for Ugali, raising the price from Ksh 50 to Ksh 700.
