Police in Naggalama, Uganda, have arrested two boda boda riders suspected of involvement in aggravated defilement targeting two schoolgirls aged 13 and 15.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, identified the suspects as Ali Ssentongo (27) and Shafik Nsubuga (25). According to police reports, Ssentongo had been hired to transport the students to and from school daily. On February 24, he allegedly deviated from the usual route and took the girls to his home in Kasawo, Mukono District.
Authorities allege that the 13-year-old was assaulted at Ssentongo’s home. It is further claimed that he later contacted Nsubuga, who allegedly assaulted the 15-year-old. Both suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Speaking to the media, Kawala warned parents and guardians about the dangers of over-trusting strangers with their children. She emphasized the need for close supervision, particularly when using boda boda riders for school transport.
“Our appeal to parents is not to over-trust strangers with your children. Always keep a close eye on them, especially when using boda boda riders for school transport,” Kawala said.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of children commuting to and from school, and the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from potential abuse.
