Irene Nekesa: Why I Quit a 100k Salary Working as Diana Bahati’s House Manager

Former househelp Irene Nekesa, who once worked in the household of popular Kenyan musician Bahati and his wife, content creator Diana Marua, has shared her reasons for leaving a job many would consider a dream opportunity.

Nekesa earned a remarkable monthly salary of Ksh 100,000—an amount significantly higher than the typical earnings of domestic workers in Kenya. However, despite the attractive pay, she says her decision to resign was shaped by personal and family-related challenges that outweighed the financial comfort the job provided.

In a candid interview with Jack Ogaga, Nekesa opened up about the pressure of being the main provider for her family. She explained that her income, though generous by industry standards, could no longer meet the rising needs of her loved ones.

“Some people may not understand why I left such a well-paying job,” Nekesa said. “But back home, I’m highly depended on. What I was earning was not enough for both my needs and my family’s.”

After stepping away from the role, Nekesa experienced a tough transition. Her move attracted both criticism and support online, with some questioning her decision. She turned to her TikTok platform not to beg, but to seek job opportunities that would allow her to continue earning through honest work.

“I didn’t want people to give me food,” she clarified. “I asked for jobs because I know I have a following. I usually request advertising gigs so I can work and earn something.”

Nekesa was quick to clarify that her departure from Diana and Bahati’s home was not fueled by any conflict. Instead, she described it as a mutual decision that allowed her to grow and explore new opportunities. She remains grateful for the support she received from the celebrity couple, including their role in helping her build an online presence.

“I needed to step out and grow,” she said. “They didn’t abandon me. In fact, they helped me establish myself on social media, and that has really helped me.”

Nekesa’s story is a powerful reminder that sometimes, even well-paying jobs may not align with one’s long-term personal or family goals. Her journey reflects the courage to make tough decisions and seek growth beyond comfort zones.
