A wave of backlash erupted online after Tanzanian social media personality Aisha Feruzy made controversial remarks about Kenyan women during a recent appearance on the popular Obinna Show Live.
While speaking on a segment focused on East African beauty standards and cultural differences, Feruzy expressed critical views about Kenyan women, alleging that they “do not know how to maintain hygiene,” are “arrogant,” and “lack beauty, even when wearing makeup.”
“Siwapendi wasichana wa Kenya, kwa sababu hawajui kuoga, na pili wako na kiburi, na tatu si warembo hata wakieka make up,” she said during the broadcast.
The comments, widely circulated across social media platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), sparked outrage from Kenyan netizens and public figures, many calling her words offensive, stereotypical, and damaging to regional unity.
In response, several Kenyan influencers, including radio host Mwalimu Rachel and lifestyle vlogger Shorn Arwa, condemned the statement and called for greater responsibility from public figures.
Cultural Backlash and Regional Sensitivities
The incident has reignited conversations around inter-country stereotypes within East Africa, particularly between Kenya and Tanzania, where online “banter” often crosses into disrespect.
Media analyst James K. Otieno noted, “While freedom of expression is important, influencers must be aware that their words have real-world consequences, especially when addressing sensitive issues like national identity, gender, and culture.”
