Tunachezwa? :Epra keeps fuel prices unchanged despite drop in shipment costs

Kenyans will not enjoy any relief at the pump this month, as fuel prices have remained unchanged despite a notable decrease in international shipment costs.

According to the latest review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), only minimal subsidies were applied—Sh0.28 per litre for diesel and Sh2.20 per litre for petrol. This is significantly lower than the previous subsidies of Sh6.09 for diesel and Sh4.66 for petrol.

Recent data shows the shipment cost of diesel dropped by 6.62 percent to $594.60 (approximately Sh77,167.18) per cubic metre in April, down from $636.75 (Sh82,561) in March. Similarly, the cost of petrol fell by 2.95 percent to $588.16 (Sh76,331.40) from $606.06 (Sh78,581.73) per cubic metre.

These reductions had raised hopes of lower pump prices in the current pricing cycle ending June 14. However, the unchanged prices have left consumers disappointed.

A reduction in fuel prices would have brought some economic relief, as fuel costs significantly affect transport, production, and electricity generation. Lower prices would have eased inflationary pressure, especially in a diesel-driven economy like Kenya’s, where businesses and farmers rely heavily on fuel to operate.
