Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has announced the suspension of commuter train services until further notice, citing the persistent heavy rains that have affected railway lines. In a public advisory issued by KRC, the organization emphasized the impact of the deluge on the operational safety of the railway network.
“We hereby inform the public that commuter train services are temporarily halted due to the ongoing heavy rains, which have adversely affected our rail infrastructure. Our decision to suspend services temporarily is driven by our unwavering commitment to prioritizing the safety of our valued customers,” stated the state corporation.
The statement further assured the public that updates regarding the resumption of normal services would be communicated promptly.
Kenya Railway’s commuter trains operate daily, shuttling passengers to and from Nairobi’s city center along five key routes: Embakasi, Syokimau, Limuru, Lukenya, and Ruiru.
The Meteorological Department has reported widespread heavy rainfall across most parts of Kenya, attributing it to the prolonged rainy season expected to persist until June.
In Nairobi, the impact of the torrential rain was evident as two trees were uprooted in the central business area overnight, causing disruptions to traffic flow on the following morning. Additionally, several areas including Mathare, Thika, Parklands, Imaara Daima, and Lang’ata Road experienced flooding, resulting in submerged houses.
The situation was further exacerbated by the overflow of the River Athi, leading to the closure of Kitengela Road, a vital artery connecting to Nairobi.
