Kenyan Gengetone ensemble Spider Clan, renowned for their chart-topping track ‘Rieng Genje’ featuring the catchy lyrics ‘Cash crop ya Nyandarua ni Mawaru,’ ‘Kaveve kazoze,’ ‘unibebe hadi mbere ya kerende,’ is reaching out for assistance.
To the surprise of many, the musicians disclosed that they did not generate any revenue from their sensational song, even after it gained widespread popularity for days.
Contrary to expectations, they revealed that they did not profit financially from the song. It wasn’t until the song skyrocketed, reaching 4 million views, that they realized the potential for monetization.
They lamented that the only individual benefiting from the song’s numerous views was the sound producer, who successfully monetized his end, leaving the artists with no financial gains for their hard work and creativity.
Moreover, they emphasized the difficulty in convincing people that they are financially strained, as the lavish lifestyle seen online does not align with their current reality.
“Those claiming we have money from the song, yes, it gave us fame and a big name, but no financial returns.”
In an interview with Jalang’o TV, the singers of ‘Kaveve Kazoze’ expressed their disappointment with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko. They revealed that although he facilitated their travel and accommodation for a performance in Mombasa, he failed to fulfill promises made earlier to support them.
“He took us to the Mombasa show, paid for our flight, and we never went with our money, even if it’s far. He covered our accommodation and return fare. However, since then, those promises he made ended right there,” the group lamented.
The group earnestly appealed to club promoters to book them for shows.
Regarding a controversy involving her and comedian 2mbili, Ngesh explained that she could not accept the help offered, as it was directed solely at her and not the rest of the crew. While the incident strained their relationship, she clarified that she harbors no ill feelings towards him.
“It’s like he wanted to push me as a solo act, but I can’t leave my crew, don’t you see?” she remarked.
The globally renowned Gengetone hit song has amassed over 4.2 million views since its release six months ago.
