In a shocking turn of events, four police officers in Uganda have been arrested after a viral video surfaced showing them harassing an elderly woman, Victoria Kabatoraine. The video, which sparked public outrage, depicted the officers dragging Kabatoraine through the mud during an arrest—a method the Uganda Police Force has condemned as violating its professional standards.
The incident occurred in Lubiri Cell, Mbarara City, located in western Uganda. Preliminary investigations suggest that Kabatoraine was accused of trespassing on a piece of land in the area. However, the elderly woman claims the land rightfully belongs to her.
In response to the incident, the Uganda Police Force issued a statement criticizing the officers’ actions. “The Uganda Police Force condemns the method of arrest depicted in this video. It contradicts our professional standards,” the statement read.
The arrested officers have been identified as ASP Andrew Betunga, Detective Constable Darious Aharizira, Detective Constable Hope Nsasirwe, and Detective Constable Loyce Kiboneka. All four are currently being detained in Mbarara as investigations and disciplinary actions proceed.
The police have assured the public that updates regarding the disciplinary measures will be provided in due course. The incident has reignited discussions about the conduct and accountability of law enforcement officers in Uganda, highlighting the need for adherence to ethical and professional standards in policing.
