Woman in Kwale arrested with 135Kg of bhang worth Ksh4 million

On Saturday, April 20, 2024, law enforcement in Kwale County made a significant arrest, apprehending a woman in possession of over 135 kilograms of marijuana with an approximate street value of Ksh4 million. Identified as Regina Akoth Kungu, the suspect was taken into custody by anti-narcotics officers from Mombasa.

Following her arrest, Regina Akoth Kungu was brought before a court in Kwale on Monday, April 22, 2024, where she pleaded not guilty to charges related to the possession of the illegal substance. The 30-year-old was apprehended at her residence in Kwa Musa, Diani, where authorities discovered numerous gunny bags containing the contraband, alongside Sh12,100 believed to be profits from her illicit activities.

Although released on Ksh50,000 cash bail, Regina Akoth Kungu’s legal proceedings are scheduled for further mention on April 30, 2024. Her arrest coincides with heightened efforts by law enforcement and government agencies to combat drug trafficking across the nation.

Illustrating this commitment, on April 10, 2024, police in Malaba town, Busia County, intercepted 18 kilograms of marijuana and 10 liters of chang’aa, an illegal brew, en route to Kayole, Nairobi, from Uganda. Acting on a tip-off from vigilant members of the public regarding suspicious individuals, officers swiftly intercepted a matatu belonging to the Eldoret Shuttle Sacco.

Similarly, on March 19, 2024, authorities in Tigania East, Meru County, intercepted a motorcycle rider transporting a stash of 30 kilograms of marijuana. During a patrol in the early hours of the morning, officers from Muthara Police Station attempted to stop the rider, who evaded their orders and attempted to flee. In response, the officers fired warning shots, prompting the rider to abandon the motorcycle and flee on foot out of fear.
