“Why is it that farmers in Mt Kenya are being paid better than farmers in Rift Valley. KTDA should move fast and tell us why this is happening ” -Senator Cheruiyot

Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen Cheruiyot has raised concerns over discrepancies in coffee payments, questioning why farmers in Mt. Kenya are reportedly earning higher prices than their counterparts in the Rift Valley.

“Why is it that farmers in Mt. Kenya are being paid better than farmers in Rift Valley? KTDA should move fast and tell us why this is happening,” Cheruiyot demanded, calling for transparency from the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA).

The senator said that equitable payment structures are essential to maintain fairness among farmers across the country. He emphasized that the government and KTDA must ensure that all coffee producers, regardless of region, receive fair compensation for their produce.

Cheruiyot’s remarks come at a time when coffee farmers are facing fluctuating market prices and increasing production costs. Analysts note that such disparities, if not addressed, could lead to regional discontent and reduced motivation for farmers in affected areas.

KTDA has yet to issue a formal response, but Cheruiyot’s statement is expected to intensify calls for accountability and equitable treatment of farmers nationwide.
