A 47-year-old woman from Nyeri County, Esther Wanjiku, is celebrating a miracle after giving birth to triplets — two girls and a boy — following 23 long years of waiting to become a mother.
Her journey to motherhood was filled with pain, ridicule, and countless disappointments. For over two decades, Esther endured failed fertility treatments and heartbreaking medical verdicts that declared it was unlikely for her to ever conceive. The situation left her feeling isolated, as some family and church members mocked her inability to bear children.
Everything changed in 2024 when, during a routine check-up for a heart condition, a doctor noticed her swollen stomach and suggested a scan. At first, Esther feared it was a growth. “I denied it at first. I told them I was barren,” she recalled. But further tests revealed the unthinkable — she was pregnant, and not with one child, but with triplets.
In May 2025, her prayers were answered as she delivered her three children safely. Holding them for the first time, she could hardly believe they were hers. “I just told God, ‘These are now your babies. Help them attain the weight required for them to come home,’” Esther said tearfully.
Though overjoyed, Esther faces the new challenge of raising three infants at once. Formula milk, which costs around KSh 1,850, is beyond her means, forcing her at times to use cow’s milk despite it causing bloating for the babies. She has also had to borrow money to afford diapers, but remains grateful for the little support she receives.
Her story has deeply touched her community. Once ridiculed, Esther now commands respect as a mother. “Now, even in church, they respect me as a mother,” she shared proudly.
