The Amount Of Crazy Money Waithaka Wa Jane Charges For A Single Mugithii Event

Mugithi performances in Kenya have evolved into a serious career path, offering a viable source of income for talented guitar players.

Gone are the days when mugithi musicians were dismissed as having nothing better to do with their lives. Today, these artists have a prominent presence on TV, radio, and social media, capturing the public’s attention.

Waithaka wa Jane’s Earnings for Performances

According to multiple sources, Waithaka wa Jane charges between Sh150,000 and Sh350,000 for a one-night club performance, with rates varying based on the client and event. Agency representatives and promoters note that his rates fluctuate, often increasing on weekends due to higher demand.

“I always perform with my band throughout the week. My set is always live with a band of about four people. Towards the weekend, I tend to raise the rates because the demand for my services is always high,” Waithaka explains.

Waithaka wa Jane: A Rising Star

John Waithaka Mwangi, popularly known as Waithaka wa Jane, hails from a family of six boys and two girls. In his mid-20s, Waithaka is the youngest sibling and has become a notable figure in the mugithi music scene. Born and raised in Murang’a County, Mathioya Subcounty, he moved to Nairobi in 2016 to live with his brother, Rwathi Wa Jane, after leaving secondary school early.

Musical Journey

Waithaka began his musical journey playing the drums before mastering the one-man guitar in the mugithi style. He credits Pato Wa Gathoni for introducing him to the guitar. Known for his renditions of old-school music, referred to as Ngogoyo, Waithaka was inspired by the late Salim Junior. Many fans believe he sings remarkably like Salim Junior, earning him the reputation of being his successor. Among his five singing brothers, Waithaka is the most well-known, with his performances featured in matatus, hotels, and clubs. He has a versatile voice and a repertoire that includes gospel music. His first performance took place at Bizraha Club.
