Several Nairobi city officials have been accused of demanding inappropriate favors from women traders in exchange for access to hawking spaces. A recent investigation revealed disturbing claims from female vendors who say they are routinely harassed when trying to secure business spots in the Central Business District (CBD).
According to some of the victims, certain county askaris allegedly pressure women to comply with unfair demands in order to be allowed to operate. Those who resist often face threats, eviction, or their goods being confiscated. These allegations have sparked public outrage, with many calling for urgent reforms within the Nairobi County Inspectorate.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has responded, stating that no one should be subjected to such mistreatment while trying to earn a living. He has promised to take firm action against any official found guilty.
Human rights groups have also condemned the reported abuse, calling for justice and better protection for all informal traders. Investigations into the matter are ongoing as affected traders hope for lasting change and accountability within the county system.
