Samuel Mbuthia: University IT Graduate Turns to Selling Biscuits and Maji Baridi for a Living, Earning Up to KES 300 Daily

In the midst of the festive season when Kenyans globally unite to celebrate Christmas and usher in the New Year with joyous festivities, the tradition often involves familial gatherings. However, for Samuel Mbuthia, a 35-year-old resident of Bahati in Nakuru County, the usual urgency to return home and partake in family celebrations is absent. Instead, his focus lies in remotely supporting his family financially while offering prayers for their well-being.

Despite possessing multiple degrees from various universities and institutions, Mr. Mbuthia finds himself compelled to engage in selling products within Nakuru town due to a set of pressing responsibilities. Financial constraints became apparent during his venture into selling biscuits.

Narrating his educational journey, Mr. Mbuthia disclosed, “I successfully completed the National Form Four Examination in 2007 with a commendable grade of B+. Subsequently, I earned a degree in Information Technology from Dedan Kimathi University.”

Following the completion of his degree, Mr. Mbuthia embarked on a job-hunting journey, tirelessly seeking employment opportunities. However, the doors to conventional employment avenues remained closed to him. Undeterred, he decided to broaden his skill set by enrolling in the Sensei Institute, where he studied road construction machinery operation. Despite ongoing efforts to secure employment in the road construction sector, he acknowledges that patience is paramount in this pursuit.

As a father of two, Mr. Mbuthia has found solace in the business of selling biscuits and water in Nakuru City. Generating around Ksh 300 daily, he expresses gratitude for the financial assistance it provides to meet his family’s needs. Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic, hoping that his education will eventually open doors to gainful employment.

Reflecting on his current situation, Mr. Mbuthia shared, “While my daily earnings support my family’s requirements, I harbor concerns about the future for both myself and my loved ones. Nevertheless, I choose to be thankful for the present rather than remain idle.”
