The media industry and fans across the country are mourning the heartbreaking death of Brilliant Owano, a promising young radio presenter whose life was tragically cut short by what first appeared to be a minor dental problem.
Owano, fondly known as “Brilly” by friends and colleagues, had been battling a painful swollen gum for almost two weeks. According to her close friend and fellow journalist Stephen Mukangai of Radio Maisha, she had sought medical help, but doctors advised against immediate tooth extraction because of the swelling. Instead, she was placed on antibiotics to manage the pain and possible infection. Unfortunately, her health continued to deteriorate.
At only 26 years old, Brilly began experiencing severe vomiting and was unable to eat solid food. She reportedly survived only on liquids as her body weakened. In a moving recollection, Mukangai revealed their last conversation. From her hospital bed, she told him that she simply wanted to sleep and that they would talk the following day. Sadly, those words turned out to be her final message to him.
By Wednesday morning, her condition worsened drastically. She became unresponsive and was immediately placed on a blood transfusion. Doctors later decided to transfer her to Bungoma for specialized treatment, but tragically, she passed away before the referral could be completed.
The devastating news was later confirmed by her grief-stricken mother, who sent out a brief text message to family friends, acknowledging the tragic loss.
Brilliant Owano was a Chuka University graduate, remembered not only for her rising career in radio but also for her lively personality and passion for football. She was a devoted supporter of Arsenal FC and AFC Leopards, often sharing her enthusiasm with fans online. Just last month, she had celebrated her birthday with joy, and her final Facebook post on August 14, where she appeared in a stylish black dress and boots, is now being widely circulated as a poignant reminder of her vibrant spirit.
Her untimely death has shocked many, with tributes and condolences pouring in from colleagues, friends, and listeners. She will be laid to rest at her parents’ home in Navakholo, Kakamega County, where the community will gather to bid farewell to a beloved daughter, friend, and broadcaster whose bright future was tragically cut short.
