RIP: Heartbreaking Photo Emerges of Baby Who Died in Grandfather’s Arms After Being Denied Care

A haunting photo of a 10-month-old baby who died in his grandfather’s arms at a Kiambu hospital has brought to light the deadly consequences of Kenya’s ongoing healthcare crisis.

But the family’s hopes for treatment were quickly dashed when they were told that doctors were on strike.

Volunteers attempted to stabilise the child with a nebuliser, citing severe chest congestion, and advised referral to a better-equipped facility.

Unable to raise the Ksh20,000 demanded for admission at St. Mulumba Hospital, the family sought to transfer the child to Maragua Hospital in Murang’a County.

However, health officials reportedly denied their request, citing county jurisdiction restrictions and even barring them from using private transport.

Trapped by bureaucracy and unable to access treatment, the baby died in the arms of his grandfather, who has since been struggling with grief and psychological distress. The heartbreaking incident has sparked national outrage, with the family accusing the Kiambu County government of negligence and demanding accountability.

County officials say investigations have begun, even as striking doctors face dismissal.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Medical Practitioners Union insists the strike will continue, blaming poor working conditions, unpaid insurance, and ignored grievances.

As political and healthcare leaders trade blame, a grieving family mourns a life lost too soon.

The photo of the lifeless baby in his grandfather’s arms now stands as a painful symbol of a failing system.
