Relief at Last! KeNHA Reopens Nakuru–Eldoret Highway After Safety Check

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has reopened the Nakuru-bound carriageway along the Nakuru–Eldoret (A8) Highway after engineers confirmed it was safe for use.

In a statement on Thursday, the authority said traffic flow has been fully restored and assured motorists that the road is now secure from further water or geological threats.

“The road is now safe from any further water and geological action,” KeNHA confirmed, adding that its team will continue monitoring the pyroduct upstream to safeguard road users.

Motorists have, however, been urged to drive with caution and observe road safety guidelines as monitoring continues.

The carriageway had been closed on Wednesday evening at the Eveready Roundabout after a sinkhole developed, disrupting traffic on the busy corridor that links Nakuru and Eldoret. KeNHA engineers immediately swung into action to assess the situation and restore normal flow.

This was not the first time the area was affected by sinkholes. In April 2025, a section of the Nakuru–Kabarak Road was closed after heavy rains triggered the collapse of the ground.

Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara has previously explained that the town sits on volcanic rock with large underground cavities, fissures, and faults, making the region prone to such geological incidents. He noted that Nakuru West, in particular, lacks a well-developed drainage system, which worsens the problem.

Authorities say sinkholes have been reported in the area before, with Eveready being among the most affected sections.
