The ongoing debate surrounding who should succeed Raila Odinga as the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party has been deemed premature and inconsequential by the Luo Council of Elders in Siaya County.
The elders have urged politicians to cease this debate immediately, emphasizing its potential to not only divide the Luo community but also the nation as a whole.
Following discussions with ODM officials, led by Siaya branch chairman Richard Okoth Otieno, the elders highlighted concerns that such discussions could jeopardize Raila’s candidacy for the African Union (AU) Commission chairperson.
Mzee Okoth emphasized the importance of politicians, particularly those from Nyanza, refraining from derogatory remarks and instead fostering unity within the ODM Party.
Vitalis Awandu Ondewe, the Luo council of elders’ national organizing secretary, reiterated that Raila has repeatedly expressed his commitment to remaining active in politics.
Pamela Kojiro, the council treasurer, stressed the necessity for political leaders to prioritize public service and fulfill their responsibilities. She emphasized the importance of promoting unity and collaboration for national development.
Mzee James Ayaga, the national vice chairman of the council, warned against power struggles and verbal conflicts among top ODM officials, cautioning that such discord could leave the party vulnerable to external interference and harm.
Ayaga emphasized the importance of resolving internal differences within the Luo community through peaceful means.
