Police release Billy Simani popularly ‘Crazy Nairobian’ after uproar on social media

Kenyan content creator Billy Simani, widely known as ‘Crazy Nairobian,’ was released by police on the evening of Saturday, June 22, 2024, after a period of detention.

His release came following the intervention of Faith Odhiambo, the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), who mobilized efforts upon discovering that he had not yet been freed despite earlier indications suggesting otherwise.

“We initially believed he had been released. However, upon sending someone to the station, we learned he was still detained,” she stated. “Upon receiving information, we acted swiftly to secure his release.”

Simani, accompanied by Faith Odhiambo, recorded a video to announce his freedom, expressing gratitude to the LSK and everyone involved in his support.

The release followed a day of mounting concern from various human rights organizations, including the Bloggers Association of Kenya, the Kenya Medical Association, the Defenders Coalition, the Independent Medical Legal Union, and Amnesty International Kenya, who had urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to clarify Simani’s whereabouts.

Simani had been reported missing since Friday, as his family and friends grew increasingly anxious about his welfare.

Meanwhile, a coordinated campaign on X platform was ongoing to advocate for his release.
