Kenyan boxing champion, Conjestina Achieng, made a triumphant return to the ring on Sunday. The renowned boxer, affectionately known as Conje, participated in a boxing match organized by former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, in Mombasa.
According to Sonko, the primary objective of the event was to reignite Conjestina’s passion and talent after her treatment at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network. In a statement, Sonko expressed his honor in attending the friendly match between Conjestina Achieng and Fatuma Zarika, two of Kenya’s finest female boxers.
Yesterday, Sonko shared captivating photos of Conje donning a white suit, showcasing her incredible transformation since starting treatment. In a tweet, Sonko emphasized his commitment to transforming lives without engaging in politics or public relations, focusing solely on the well-being of Kenyans.
Sonko also shared a series of images depicting Conje in a deplorable condition, when her family and friends had lost hope. He used this opportunity to encourage his followers to pursue their dreams relentlessly and never give up. He reminded them that success often follows sacrifice and that every failure presents a chance for redemption. Sonko urged everyone to remain strong and rely on God’s grace to navigate life’s challenges.
A decade ago, Conje faced financial and mental health struggles after retiring from boxing in 2011, almost fading into obscurity. Her mental well-being declined rapidly, ultimately ending her career. In September 2022, she was admitted to the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Hospital in Miritini, where she received treatment for her deteriorating health and mental state.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko came to Conjestina’s aid after visiting her at the hospital. He provided her with boxing equipment and facilitated her admission to various rehabilitation centers in Nairobi and Diani Beach. After eleven months, Conjestina seems to be on the path to recovery.
Sonko shared photos that showcased Conje back in the boxing ring, symbolizing her progress toward healing. He acknowledged her indomitable spirit, which refused to be extinguished despite personal challenges and setbacks. Sonko commended Conjestina’s unwavering determination and described her rehabilitation journey as an inspiration to countless young people who were on the verge of giving up on life.
