Babu’s actions in January 2016 resulted in a serious incident at a club in Kilimani, Nairobi county, where he mishandled a firearm, leading to the shooting of DJ Evolve.
Recently, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East disclosed the amount he spent on DJ Evolve’s medical treatment. In court, Babu stated that he had spent a total of Ksh58.6 million on the DJ’s care.
Out of the accumulated amount, Ksh17 million was used to purchase an apartment for DJ Evolve in Kilimani. Additionally, Babu had paid Ksh23 million in hospital bills. He also mentioned that he had established a DJ academy to support DJ Evolve in resuming his career and sustaining himself.
Babu informed the court that he had hired two nurses, two physiotherapists, and one occupational therapist for DJ Evolve, for whom he was paying a monthly sum of Ksh300,000.
As a leader, Babu explained that he took responsibility for DJ Evolve’s medical expenses since his family was unable to provide the necessary care. The total medical bills amounted to Ksh23 million. Given DJ Evolve’s immobility, Babu bought an apartment worth around Ksh17 million in Kilimani and hired the aforementioned medical professionals to assist him.
Furthermore, Babu revealed that he sent Ksh70,000 per month to cover DJ Evolve’s daily expenses and food, while the remaining amount was allocated to his monthly medical bills. So far, he has paid Ksh11.1 million over a period of 37 months. The monthly medicine costs amounted to Ksh80,000, and Babu has paid Ksh5.5 million for 37 months.
Babu stated that he and DJ Evolve were friends prior to the unfortunate incident, emphasizing that he had a commitment to helping those in need after his own experience growing up in poverty in the Nyalenda slums of Kisumu.
Miguna Miguna criticized Babu Owino for disclosing his expenditure on DJ Evolve’s treatment. In a series of tweets, the controversial lawyer argued that Babu had no moral authority to discuss spending Ksh58 million on DJ Evolve’s medical care since Babu himself was responsible for the DJ’s condition.
Miguna further suggested that if Kenya were governed by the rule of law, Babu Owino would have received a minimum sentence of 20 years for his actions and would have had to compensate DJ Evolve with Ksh2 billion if a legal suit were filed against him.
Miguna expressed his belief that the video evidence clearly demonstrated Babu’s guilt in the attempted murder of DJ Evolve and argued that there should be no option for alternative dispute resolution or diversion for a perpetrator of such a crime. Miguna called for accountability in other cases as well and criticized the current state of affairs in Kenya, referring to it as impunity.
