PAIN: Kenyan grandfather Who Went Missing Hours After Arriving in US For his Grandson’s Graduation is Yet To Be Found

A family in Kiambu County is pleading for answers after their relative, Reuben Waithaka, mysteriously went missing in the United States nearly five months ago.

Waithaka had travelled to Alabama in May 2025 to witness his first grandson’s high school graduation—a milestone he was eager to celebrate. But just a day after arriving, the joyous trip turned into a nightmare.

On the morning of Sunday, May 15, Waithaka reportedly stepped outside his son’s home in Calera, Alabama, and never returned.

Doorbell camera footage captured his last sighting at 11:08 a.m., showing him wearing khaki trousers, a blue-and-white checked shirt, and black shoes. Since then, no trace of him has been found.

The family immediately reported the case to police, circulated posters, and made online appeals. Despite massive searches, Waithaka remains missing.

Authorities in Calera have deployed drones, helicopters, thermal cameras, tracking dogs, and off-road vehicles in an effort to locate him, but the trail has since gone cold.

The disappearance has left the family shattered.

“We still hold on to hope,” a relative shared, as the search continues.

The Calera Police Department has assured the family of its commitment to finding answers and urged anyone with information to call 205-668-3505.

For Waithaka’s family in both Kenya and the U.S., what was meant to be a season of celebration has instead become a painful wait, filled with unanswered questions and fading leads.
