Gladys Wanga, the chairperson of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Homa Bay governor, has responded firmly to criticism from certain Azimio leaders regarding ODM’s alleged involvement with President William Ruto’s government.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 19, 2024, Wanga clarified that ODM has no formal agreement or partnership with Kenya Kwanza that would make them joint partners in government.
“As a party, we refuse to engage with individuals who act in bad faith or with ulterior motives. The recent questioning of ODM’s and Rt. Hon Raila Odinga’s commitment to the opposition reflects a lack of good faith on the part of our critics,” Wanga stated.
She emphasized that ODM will persist in its role as a minority party, working alongside others to advocate for accountability, transparency, equity, and efficient service delivery for the Kenyan people.
Wanga expressed disappointment that some Azimio leaders were casting doubt on ODM’s place within the coalition and its dedication to its opposition role.
“We would not take these criticisms seriously if they were not targeting Raila Odinga, the ODM Party leader and the leader of Azimio. It seems someone within Azimio is questioning Raila Odinga’s commitment to holding the government accountable,” she noted.
The controversy surrounding ODM’s position began in July 2024 when four ODM officials were appointed as cabinet secretaries in President Ruto’s administration as part of a broad-based government.
“In response to a national emergency and the need to stabilize the nation, ODM agreed to release these members in their individual capacities,” Wanga explained. The officials in question are former Deputy Party Leaders Ali Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya, former National Chairman John Mbadi, former Secretary for Political Affairs Hon. James Opiyo Wandayi, and former National Elections Coordinating Committee member Ms. Batrice Askul.
According to Wanga, these individuals joined the government not as ODM representatives but as capable individuals whom the president believed could contribute significantly to his administration and help achieve national objectives.
