Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has dismissed rumors that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is planning to expel Embakasi East MP Babu Owino from the party. Speaking during an interview, Oburu clarified that Babu remains a valued member of ODM and assured him of full support as the party prepares for the 2027 General Election.
Oburu revealed that he recently held a meeting with Babu Owino, during which he assured the youthful legislator that the party still needs him. “I told him to feel comfortable because no one is chasing him. ODM is his political home, and he will be given a fair chance to vie for the Nairobi gubernatorial ticket through our party,” said Oburu.
The Senator emphasized that ODM is a democratic party that believes in fair competition. He explained that if Babu Owino wins the party nominations against other aspirants interested in the Nairobi Governor’s seat, then the party will fully support his candidature.
When asked about the current Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Oburu said he is a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and therefore not part of ODM’s plans. He reiterated that the party will field its own candidate for the capital’s top seat, noting that Babu Owino remains one of the strongest contenders.
Oburu’s remarks come amid growing speculation about internal divisions within ODM and claims that young leaders like Babu Owino were being sidelined. His assurance is seen as an attempt to restore unity and confidence among the party’s youthful members ahead of the next election cycle.
Political analysts believe that Babu’s growing popularity among the youth could make him a formidable force in the Nairobi gubernatorial race, should he secure the ODM ticket.
