A Nairobi traffic police officer, Constable Haron Mwangi, stationed at Buruburu Police Station, has been suspended after a video surfaced showing him soliciting bribes from matatu drivers in the Umoja area. In the video, Constable Mwangi is seen collecting bribes from six matatu drivers while managing traffic at the B Center junction in Umoja. The interaction was captured by an informant without Constable Mwangi’s knowledge.
Resila Onyango, the spokesperson for the National Police Service (NPS), confirmed the suspension and stated that procedures for Constable Mwangi’s dismissal are underway. Ms. Onyango commended the public and media for their cooperation in the fight against corruption, emphasizing the NPS’s commitment to combatting corruption within its ranks.
Previously, the Kenyan Police Force had removed Constable Mwangi from the Traffic Police Unit and reassigned him to the main police station pending further administrative action. However, the exact amount of bribes received by Constable Mwangi could not be verified from the video clip.
