A woman from Murang’a County has come forward with a personal account of the hardship and pain she endured during her seven-year marriage. Speaking to a local news, 24-year-old Goretti Wambui opened up about how financial strain, love, and eventual disappointment shaped her life.
Goretti revealed that she dropped out of school due to lack of fees and later married a boda boda rider. In the beginning, things were smooth. But over time, her husband’s behavior changed. He started drinking heavily and often stayed out late, leaving the family worried.
“He was supportive at first, but things changed when alcohol took over. I tried to run small businesses, but he would sometimes misuse the income,” she said.
As her husband’s drinking worsened, Goretti became the sole provider for their children. She recalled difficult moments when disagreements would arise, sometimes forcing her to leave the house with their children.
“There was a time we spent the night in the bathroom because we had nowhere else to go,” she remembered with emotion.
The situation escalated during a disagreement, when her husband, irritated and under the influence, became aggressive. Her cries attracted her in-laws, who rushed to her aid. Concerned for her safety and that of her unborn child, Goretti temporarily moved into her mother-in-law’s home.
The following day, her husband came to speak with her, but tensions flared again. During a heated exchange, emotions ran high, leading to a family conflict involving his parents. In the midst of the altercation, tempers boiled over, prompting the father-in-law to step in and separate the parties involved.
Things took a turn for the worse when her husband allegedly became destructive, forcing the family to seek help from Goretti’s relatives. With the situation increasingly unstable, she decided to return to her mother’s home for safety while considering her next steps.
Goretti’s story highlights the struggles many women silently endure in difficult marriages, and the strength it takes to speak out and seek peace—for themselves and their children.
