A 31-year-old woman from Ngelani village in Mitaboni, Kathiani, Machakos County is fighting for her life in hospital after allegedly attempting suicide by ingesting poison, moments after giving the same substance to her three-year-old daughter, who died.
Witnesses said relatives rushed the two to a nearby chemist after finding the mother vomiting a black substance and writhing in pain. She reportedly admitted that both she and her child had consumed a poisonous chemical.
Sadly, the little girl passed away while receiving first aid at the chemist. The woman survived and was transferred to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Police later moved the child’s body to the morgue as investigations into the incident got underway. Detectives say the motive is still unclear but confirmed that the woman is likely to face murder charges once she recovers.
This tragic case has once again highlighted the growing mental health crisis and domestic-related tragedies affecting families in Kenya.
