A giant school in Kisii County has been closed indefinitely after a violent riot from parents over mass failure in the just-released 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). The parents stormed the school yesterday, January 30, 2023, throwing all teachers out of the staff room before shutting down the school.
Speaking to Egesa Fm, a Royal Media Service-sponsored radio station, the Masaba South Subcounty Director of Education, Mr. Enoch Maritimo, said that the ugly incident at Masimba High School has disabled the learning progress in the institution as parents were unhappy with the performance of the 2022 KCSE examination. He said he reached an amicable decision to send all the students back to their homes for security reasons.
“The school experienced riots from parents and guardians who violently attacked our teachers at school. They were calling for the removal of the school principal and some specified teachers. The police from Masaba South Police Station controlled the situation, as no major losses were reported,” Mr. Maritimo told the Egesa FM reporters.
Confirmed reports from the school administration indicate that the school scored a general mean grade of D- (minus), having scored 2.16 marks in the 2022 KCSE examination. The poor result has culminated in harsh responses from parents and other educational stakeholders. The school managed to take position 34 out of 36 schools in the sub-county.
