Tears flowed freely in Kitui after a long-lost mother and daughter finally reunited following 18 years of separation. The emotional moment, captured on video, showed the two embracing tightly as they wept with joy.
Jennifer Mueni Muasya broke down as she held her daughter, Mary Wambui Koine, after nearly two decades apart. The reunion was made even more moving by the fact that Muasya had been forced to part with her child under difficult circumstances in 2007.
According to Musyi FM, Muasya left her six-month-old baby in Mathioya, Murang’a, after irreconcilable differences with her husband. The decision, though heartbreaking, was not out of neglect but due to a situation that left her with no other choice.
Their first meeting since then was nothing short of emotional. Both mother and daughter clutched matching handkerchiefs to wipe away the steady stream of tears. Wambui, dressed in a white T-shirt and blue jeans, leaned on her mother’s shoulder as relatives and friends nearby tried to console them.
In the video, Muasya cried even harder as her daughter wrapped her arms tightly around her waist. The raw emotions of the moment quickly spread online, where the reunion video went viral and sparked mixed reactions.
Some netizens were sympathetic, praising the mother and daughter for finding their way back to each other, while others were more critical of Muasya’s past decision.
One commenter, Steve Mutisya, wrote: “Wanawake wengine wanakuanga na roho ya chuma. Hiyo miaka yote unakula, unalala, ata siezi kuita mama yangu!”
Another, Lynn Eve, questioned: “Sasa mbona hakuwa anajua boma yenye alikuwa ameolewa aende kuangalia mtoto wake?”
Despite the divided opinions, many agreed that the reunion was a powerful reminder of the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.
