A tragic incident unfolded in Irenji Village, Shinyalu Sub-County, Kakamega County on Tuesday, 8 April 2025, when a 54 year old man, Magnus Lumiti Anyika, was allegedly killed by his wife for returning home late. The deceased had reportedly been visiting his sister when the altercation with his wife, 48 year old Olivia Shisali, erupted upon his return.
Olivia is alleged to have struck Magnus with a blunt object during a domestic dispute, resulting in his death. According to family members, Olivia had a history of physical abuse towards her husband, often fuelled by alcohol.
Magnus’s brother, Setsu Atenya, revealed that the deceased had previously left home to escape the abuse and had even contemplated relocating to Mombasa. He further disclosed that their daughter had recently convinced Magnus to return home in a bid to mend the fractured family ties.
“We were concerned about the repeated violence he faced. There were moments he disappeared just to find peace,” Atenya said. Relative Rosemary Anjere echoed the sentiments, lamenting that the abuse had persisted for years and went largely unaddressed.
The horrific discovery of Magnus’s body, lying in a pool of blood, was made by village elder Ernest Muloki and Nyumba Kumi representative Muhanji Alisa, who were alerted by family members. The incident has shocked the local community and sparked calls for greater attention to be paid to domestic violence, including cases involving male victims.
Local law enforcement has launched a full investigation into the incident, with the community demanding justice and the swift arrest of the suspect. Leaders in the area have urged authorities to take the issue of domestic abuse seriously, regardless of the victim’s gender, stressing the need for more support systems and interventions to prevent similar tragedies.
