Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justine Muturi has responded sharply to President William Ruto’s remarks suggesting he was “fairly incompetent” in handling legal matters related to the establishment of a Waqf Endowment Fund.
Muturi clarified that under the Waqf Act No. 8 of 2022, there is no legal provision for a Muslim Endowment Fund. He emphasized that Waqf is a religious, charitable, and benevolent endowment exclusively for Muslims and is managed by the Waqf Commission.
His response came after President Ruto, during an Iftar dinner at State House, Nairobi, criticized Muturi’s tenure as Attorney General, stating, “I had a problem with the AG who was there before—he was fairly incompetent. But now, I have a very competent lady in the position, and I can assure you that the issues of Waqf will be sorted out within months.”
This marks the first time Ruto has directly criticized Muturi, who has recently voiced concerns about government actions, including alleged abductions. Meanwhile, the president assured the Muslim community that, under the current Attorney General, longstanding legal challenges surrounding Waqf would soon be addressed.
