Joyce Gituro: Reason I quit my well-paying radio job at Citizen

Former veteran radio presenter Joyce Gituro has finally revealed the reasons behind her departure from her radio job at Media Max, despite earning a lucrative salary.

Joyce Gituro, who co-hosted a show with Jeridah Andayi, had a career at Citizen TV that spanned nearly a decade. In an interview with Jeff Kuria, she shared that her role at Citizen did not align with her long-term goals and aspirations.

“I worked at Citizen from 2004 to 2011. In 2011, I was promoted, but my role was reduced to hosting just one show on Sundays,” Joyce recalled.

However, Joyce felt conflicted about the Sunday show, as she wasn’t a Christian at the time. “I couldn’t imagine waking up to preach, but looking back now, I’m thankful because it helped me grow in my faith,” she explained.

In 2018, Joyce received a more attractive offer from Media Max, where she was appointed as the brand manager overseeing six Media Max-owned stations. Despite the opportunity, she found the working environment challenging.

“I was to be the brand manager, which wasn’t a bad role, but the environment made it difficult for me to work effectively. After just over a year, I resigned, even though I was a single mother,” Gituro said.

Before making the decision to resign, Joyce evaluated her financial situation. She assessed her investments and determined that she could support her children’s education and lifestyle for at least five years post-resignation.

“I looked at my investments and realized I could sustain my kids and their education for the next five years after resigning,” she shared.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Joyce contracted the virus and also launched her own communications company. Although she misses being on air, she is firm in her decision not to return to radio full-time.

“I miss being on air, as it’s my passion. But I would never want to return to radio full-time,” she concluded.
