Irene Nekesa: Why I Walked Away from a Ksh 100K Job with Diana Marua and Bahati

Former househelp Irene Nekesa, once employed by popular Kenyan musician Bahati and his wife Diana Marua, recently opened up about her decision to leave a job that paid her a remarkable monthly salary of Ksh 100,000—a figure considered extremely high for domestic workers in Kenya.

While the pay was impressive, Nekesa revealed that her decision to quit was influenced by personal and financial realities that outweighed the attractive income. Speaking candidly, she explained that despite earning far more than the average househelp in Kenya, the salary was still not enough to meet the increasing demands of her family, who depend on her as their main provider.

“People don’t really understand what life is like out here,” Nekesa said in an interview with Jack Ogaga. “Some wonder why I left such a well-paying job, but they don’t see the responsibilities I have back home. I’m heavily relied upon, and the truth is, what I was earning wasn’t enough to support my family and take care of my own needs.”

After resigning from her role in the Bahati household, Nekesa faced a challenging period. Her decision attracted criticism from some members of the public, who were quick to judge when she turned to her TikTok followers and a Good Samaritan for support. However, Nekesa was quick to clarify that she wasn’t seeking handouts—she was asking for work opportunities.

“I wasn’t looking for people to give me food,” she emphasized. “I asked for jobs because I have a following. I often request advertising deals so I can earn through my efforts.”

Departure on Good Terms

Contrary to assumptions of conflict or mistreatment, Nekesa clarified that her exit from Diana and Bahati’s home was based on mutual understanding. She spoke positively about her time with the celebrity couple, noting that they were always supportive and played a crucial role in encouraging her to chase her dreams.

“They didn’t just let me go,” Nekesa said. “They helped me build a social media presence, which has now become a key part of my growth. I needed to step out and pursue personal growth, and we all agreed it was time.”

Her story is one of courage, resilience, and a strong desire to build a better life—not just for herself, but for those who depend on her.
