“Huku Yues” Ibrahim Onami: Kenyan Who Quit 8k an Hour Job as Mortuary Attendant in US Due to Fear of Dead Bodies

Ibrahim Onami’s journey from Kenya to the United States took an unexpected turn when he accepted a job at a morgue to achieve financial stability.

Driven by the promise of better opportunities, Onami relocated to the U.S. with high hopes of prosperity. “There are plenty of job opportunities here. Whatever kind of work you’re looking for, you’ll find it,” he said, expressing his willingness to take on any job that would provide him with a steady income.

Fortunately, he landed a well-paying position that earned him an impressive hourly wage exceeding Ksh8,000. However, his path to financial security led him to an unconventional and emotionally demanding role.

In his pursuit of stability, Onami took on a challenging job at a morgue, where his primary responsibility was cremating the deceased. This role required remarkable resilience and courage, as it involved daily interactions with death. While many would shy away from such work, Onami embraced it as a means to build a better future. Despite the emotional and psychological toll, he found solace in the benefits provided by his employer.

The morgue offered Onami accommodation near his workplace and granted him two annual vacations, giving him moments of rest and relaxation. Additionally, his employer provided medical and life insurance coverage, as well as various allowances. A unique benefit of the job was that if Onami passed away while still employed, his body would be cremated at the facility free of charge, with an option to have his remains airlifted back to Kenya. These incentives underscored the level of support he received from his employer.

However, the constant exposure to death and grief began to take a heavy toll on Onami’s mental and emotional well-being. Despite the attractive perks, he ultimately made the tough decision to resign from his position at the morgue.

Today, Onami works as a licensed nurse at a clinic in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. In addition to his nursing career, he has ventured into content creation during his time in the U.S.

Through his vlog, Onami shares unique insights into American life and culture, offering practical tips such as affordable shopping options and showcasing the vibrant lifestyle in the U.S. His content, delivered in a blend of Sheng and Kiswahili, also emphasizes humility and prudent financial management. Onami’s journey serves as an inspiring example of resilience and adaptability, demonstrating the lengths one can go to achieve a better future.
