For nearly four decades, Uganda has known only one leader—Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Since seizing power in 1986, Museveni has dominated the country’s political landscape, ruling with an iron fist while presenting himself as the guarantor of stability. Now, as Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections, a new wave of speculation has emerged: will Museveni finally step down after this contest?
In a video that has been circulating widely on social media, Museveni is alleged to have urged Ugandans to “vote for him for the last time” in 2026, promising to hand over power and retire from politics thereafter. If true, this would mark the end of an era—an unprecedented 44 years in power by the time he exits in 2030.

But questions remain. Museveni has been branded a dictator by his critics, accused of using state machinery to manipulate elections, silence opponents, and secure victory after victory. Over the years, he has consistently dismissed talk of retirement, amending the constitution to abolish both presidential term limits and the age limit for candidates. Against that backdrop, many Ugandans view his supposed retirement promise with deep skepticism.
Another dimension to the speculation is the possible succession plan. Rumors are rife that Museveni may be grooming his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the commander of Uganda’s armed forces, to take over when he finally steps aside. Already, Muhoozi has been making political statements on social media, fueling speculation that a dynastic transition could be in the works.
If Museveni indeed retires after 2026, it would mark a historic turning point for Uganda. Yet, given his past record of clinging to power, many citizens and analysts doubt whether he will willingly leave office. For now, Ugandans wait for clarity as the 2026 elections draw closer, torn between hope for democratic transition and fear of political déjà vu.
Whether Museveni truly steps down or not, one thing is certain: his legacy—controversial, divisive, and enduring—will continue to shape Uganda’s history for generations.
