Uganda’s First Son and top military officer, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has once again made headlines after praising Tanzania for conducting what he described as one of the most credible and transparent elections in Africa.
In a statement shared on social media, General Muhoozi commended President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her leadership and commitment to democracy, saying Tanzania had set a new standard in electoral integrity across the region.
“Since I grew up, I’ve never seen credible and cleaner elections like Tanzania did. I urge my father, President Museveni, to do some benchmarking from Samia Suluhu,” Muhoozi said.
His remarks have stirred debate both in Uganda and across East Africa, with many interpreting them as a subtle criticism of Uganda’s electoral system, which has often faced accusations of irregularities and lack of transparency.
Political analysts noted that Muhoozi’s statement could reflect his growing interest in governance and reform, especially as speculation continues about his potential political ambitions.
Supporters of the Tanzanian President applauded Muhoozi’s comments, saying they reflect international recognition of President Samia’s efforts to promote peace, stability, and credible elections since taking office.
On the other hand, Ugandan commentators expressed mixed reactions — some agreeing that Uganda could learn from Tanzania’s model, while others viewed the remarks as politically sensitive given Muhoozi’s close relationship with his father, President Yoweri Museveni.
General Muhoozi, known for his bold and often controversial public statements, has in recent months positioned himself as a reform-minded leader and a strong admirer of effective governance across Africa.
