Four people die after Kensliver bus overturns along Embu-Meru highway

On Sunday, April 7, tragedy struck as a bus traveling along the Meru-Embu highway was involved in a devastating accident, claiming the lives of four individuals.

The incident took place at Nithi Bridge, where a Kensliver Bus en route from Meru to Nairobi met with catastrophe. Meru County police commander, Zacchaeus Ng’eno, confirmed the accident, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

Addressing the media at the accident site, Commander Ng’eno urged drivers to exercise caution and prioritize safety to prevent future tragedies. He emphasized the importance of vehicle inspection and maintenance to ensure roadworthiness.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident likely resulted from a brake failure, causing the bus to lose control and overturn.

Notably, Nithi Bridge has gained notoriety as a hazardous spot along the highway, characterized by its steep gradient spanning three kilometers. This isn’t the first fatal accident to occur there; in August 2000, a tragic incident claimed the lives of 45 individuals and left many more injured when a passenger bus plunged into the river.

Sadly, this recent accident adds to the history of fatalities at the location. Remarkably, it transpired less than 24 hours after another tragic incident in Timboroa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway. That accident involved six trucks and resulted in the loss of five lives on Saturday, April 6, 2024.
