The family of the late Kalenjin musician Diana Chemutai Musila, also known as Chelele, has recently provided an update on the well-being of her daughters. In an interview with VJ MASTERMIND, a Kalenjin YouTuber, the girls’ grandmother shared the challenges they have faced since Chelele was tragically killed in 2016.
“When their mother was alive, we had a comfortable life. I didn’t face any problems because she took care of all of us,” the grandmother recalled. “After her passing, the responsibility of raising the children fell on me. Now that they have grown up, they consider me their mother.”
She continued, “They have a strong passion for education and were attending Kapkwen School until recently when we moved back to our ancestral home.”
According to their grandmother, Sasha Mumbi and Tasha Mwende, the twins, were compelled to leave a private school when the sponsor who had been paying their fees discontinued his support. Currently, Sasha and Tasha are enrolled in Salaik Primary School in Bomet County, where they are in the eighth grade and preparing to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams this year.
“I made the decision not to burden others with the responsibility of paying their school fees, especially when they themselves are struggling to provide for their own children,” explained their grandmother. She expressed her greatest wish for Sasha and Tasha to continue their education until they achieve success.
Regarding the income generated from Chelele’s songs, her sister Beatrice clarified that the family has never received any money since her passing. “We were informed that her YouTube account was hacked, and consequently, we haven’t received any funds from it. It would have been beneficial for her children,” Beatrice noted.
She added that the family faces challenges in providing for the twins, as none of them have a stable source of income. “Due to the difficult economic times, their grandmother is unable to fully provide for their food and school fees. However, whenever I have some money, I send it to assist them,” Beatrice explained.
She appealed to Kenyans for support in the form of food and school fees for Sasha and Tasha. “We kindly ask Kenyans to assist us in providing for Sasha and Tasha,” pleaded Beatrice.
The renowned Kalenjin musician was tragically murdered on January 7, 2016, in Kapkwen, Bomet County. Her estranged husband, Eric Musila, was linked to her death. The family had hoped that justice would be served, but in 2019, Musila was acquitted of the charges.
