Kennedy Kalombotole, a man suspected in two separate murders inside Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), remains a mystery to both investigators and the court.
His arrest followed a chilling discovery by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) after the second killing in July 2025.
Blood-stained slippers were found hidden under his bed in Ward 7B, leading to his immediate arrest.
Kalombotole is the main suspect in the killings of two patients: Gilbert Kinyua in February and Edward Maingi Ndegwa in July. He was also admitted to the same ward where both victims died.
Despite his continued presence at the facility, authorities still cannot confirm who he really is.
Appearing before the Kibera Law Courts on Thursday, the prosecution told Magistrate Daisy Mutai that the State is still in the dark about the suspect’s true identity.
He has no identification documents, no known relatives, and no fixed residence.
The court granted the prosecution’s request to detain him for ten more days at Mbagathi Hospital under tight security.
Magistrate Mutai ruled that releasing him would pose a risk and that returning him to KNH was inappropriate since it is the scene of the crime.
In a statement, Dr. William Sigilai of KNH said Kalombotole was first admitted to the ICU in November 2022 and later transferred to the general ward.
He was described as homeless, and several attempts to identify him through fingerprint records and social media appeals were unsuccessful.
Dr. Sigilai added that Kalombotole was placed in a shelter in June 2024, but after falling ill again in December, he was returned to KNH.
The shelter later declined to readmit him, forcing him to remain at the hospital, where the two murders would later take place.
