Detectives are probing a robbery incident involving a construction foreman who lost Sh307,000 shortly after withdrawing the money from a bank in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
According to police, the victim had gone to Diamond Trust Bank in Kitengela on May 3 to withdraw the funds meant for paying workers at a construction site in the Kimalati area. After completing the transaction, he got into his car and began driving towards the site.
On his way, he was stopped by two individuals dressed in traffic police uniforms who claimed his vehicle had committed a traffic offence. They allegedly asked to accompany him to a police station. He agreed, allowing one uniformed man and another in civilian clothes into his vehicle.
Soon after, the men reportedly turned against him and took control of the car. The victim was driven to the Old Kiambu Road area in Nairobi, about 50km from Kitengela, where he was left inside the car while the suspects fled with the keys and the money.
He later reported the matter at the Muthaiga Police Station. Authorities say they are working together with officers in Kitengela to track down the suspects. Meanwhile, around 15 workers at the construction site were left unpaid.
In a separate incident, a businessman in Machakos lost Sh900,000 under similar circumstances.
The businessman said he withdrew Sh1.5 million from KCB Machakos on April 25 and placed the money in two separate envelopes—one with Sh900,000 and another with Sh600,000.
He then drove to a local hotel for a meeting, unaware that he was being followed. Upon returning to his car in the evening, he found the envelope with Sh900,000 missing. The vehicle had been broken into, while the second envelope remained untouched.
Police from Kyumbi Police Station are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning bank staff as part of their investigation.
Authorities warn that some of these cases may involve insider information leaks or criminals posing as customers inside banking halls to monitor large transactions.
