Prominent American author Joe Girard humorously remarked that the elevator to success is currently out of order, and one must ascend using the stairs, taking one step at a time. This sentiment resonates with the remarkable journey of Jeremiah Nyaga Njoroge, popularly known as Chef Gathemba, as he transcended from humble beginnings to stardom, shedding negative labels along the way.
Gathemba’s narrative commences in Subukia, Nakuru County, his place of birth and upbringing. His educational journey led him through Sidai Primary School in Subukia and later to Kieni Secondary School. Post his Form Four education, financial constraints prevented him from pursuing college, prompting him to undertake menial jobs to support his family’s daily needs.
Embarking on this challenging path, he joined his aunt in Githumu, Murang’a County, securing his first job as a gardener at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). Concurrently, he accompanied his aunt, who worked for Nakuru County Government, during his free time. Despite earning meager wages of Ksh80 per day, Gathemba aspired to become a renowned artist, crafting vernacular songs during this period.
In pursuit of broader horizons, Gathemba ventured to Nairobi, residing with his cousin in Dandora. A fortuitous connection through his cousin led him to a former Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) employee. Desperate to impress, Gathemba fabricated a background in comedy, securing a role as a police officer at the Kenya National Theatre. His dedication and growth in the field led to more significant roles, including involvement in set books with established actors.
Despite his successes, Gathemba faced adversity when acting opportunities dwindled, leading him to Narok for a brief foray into farming. Encouragement from colleagues prompted his return to the city, where he had adopted a Maasai accent, enhancing his prospects. This linguistic skill secured him a role as Madvd’s uncle on Citizen TV’s Machachari, catapulting him to fame within a few months.
However, the allure of fame proved transient as Gathemba succumbed to alcohol addiction, jeopardizing his thriving career. Following the conclusion of the Machachari season, a lack of acting gigs pushed him into a stint as a tout, further exacerbating his struggles due to stress-induced alcohol dependency.
Realizing the need for change, Gathemba decided to turn his life around. He secured a role as an actor on Inooro TV’s Micii ni Ndogo, refining his voice-over skills. This eventually led to an opportunity with Media Max Limited’s creative team, opening the door for a presenting role at Kameme FM. Gathemba’s journey serves as a testament to the resilience required to ascend the stairs to success, overcoming challenges one step at a time.
