Boniface Mwangi is a well-known Kenyan photojournalist and human rights activist. He rose to prominence after documenting the 2007-2008 post-election violence through his powerful images, which were part of the ‘Picha Mtaani’ project.
Born in 1983, Mwangi grew up in Nyeri with his grandparents before moving to Nairobi. He studied at Maganjo and Pangani Primary Schools, later joining Kabete Approved School. However, he was expelled in 1998 for speaking out against poor school conditions.
After a long break, he returned to school in 2016 and sat for his KCSE at age 33. He later studied journalism and pursued further education in human rights and photography at New York University.
Mwangi has received several global awards, including CNN Africa Photojournalist of the Year (2008, 2010) and the Tutu Leadership Fellowship (2020).
In 2017, he contested the Starehe MP seat under the Ukweli Party but lost. He remains active in pushing for social justice and was among those arrested during the June 2024 protests against the Finance Bill.
He is married to Njeri Mwangi and has three children.
