Residents of Ihururu village in Nyeri County were left in disbelief after a domestic argument between a couple turned deadly on Monday evening.
According to eyewitnesses, the couple had spent the evening drinking together at a local bar before returning home. Once inside, an argument broke out after the man accused his wife of eating a larger portion of the meat they had bought.
The disagreement quickly escalated into a physical fight. Neighbours reported hearing screams coming from the house, but by the time they rushed in to intervene, the woman was lying unconscious on the floor with severe injuries to her head and neck.
She was immediately rushed to Nyeri County Referral Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
Police identified the suspect as a 36-year-old casual laborer, who fled the scene shortly after committing the act.
Confirming the incident, Nyeri County Police Commander Lawrence Njoroge said officers have launched a manhunt for the suspect. “We are calling on him to surrender and allow justice to take its course,” Njoroge stated, adding that crucial evidence had been recovered from the scene.
The body of the deceased was moved to the Nyeri County Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
Shocked residents described the couple as generally peaceful but said they often argued after drinking.
Local leaders have condemned the killing and urged couples to resolve conflicts peacefully, warning that minor domestic disputes are increasingly turning tragic.
Police say investigations are ongoing and have assured the public that the suspect will soon be apprehended.
