Grief and silence have settled over the Kenya Medical Training College community following the death of a young nursing student in Eldoret.
The student was identified as Rita Chumba, a twenty-one-year-old second-year nursing trainee at KMTC Kaptumo Campus.
Her death was reported just a day before Valentine’s Day, a period often linked to strong emotions among young people.
According to fellow students, Rita had recently gone through a painful breakup. Friends said she appeared deeply hurt and emotionally distressed after the relationship ended.
In the days leading up to her death, she was described as quiet and withdrawn, which worried some of her close friends, though none expected such an outcome.
Her body was found in her rented house in Eldoret, sending shock across the campus and nearby hostels.
News of her passing spread fast, with students gathering in small groups to mourn and comfort each other.
Lecturers remembered Rita as a disciplined and focused student who showed strong commitment to her studies and clinical work.
They said she had clear goals and the drive to succeed in the nursing profession.
College administrators urged calm and reminded students to seek counselling and guidance whenever they face emotional or personal challenges.
They emphasised the importance of speaking out and supporting one another during difficult times.
As tributes continue to pour in, Rita’s family, classmates and teachers are left mourning a young life cut short and calling for more attention to mental well-being among students.
