Trade unionist Francis Atwoli has urged politicians to refrain from politicizing the death of businessman and former politician Cyrus Jirongo. Speaking during Jirongo’s burial, Atwoli emphasized that while he has been part of Kenya’s political landscape for a long time and has witnessed many events, the late leader’s passing should be treated with dignity and respect.
Atwoli warned that turning the funeral into a platform for political point-scoring is inappropriate and undermines the grieving family’s needs. He called on all leaders to exercise restraint, focusing instead on offering condolences and support to the bereaved.
The veteran unionist’s remarks resonated with many Kenyans, highlighting concerns over the frequent politicization of national tragedies. Atwoli stressed that funerals should be moments of unity and reflection rather than arenas for political rivalry.
