The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo has publicly expressed gratitude to former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta for his role in advancing peace efforts in the region. Speaking during a high-level event in the United States attended by former U.S. President Donald Trump and other international leaders, the Congolese Head of State took a moment to single out Uhuru for his contributions to the stabilization process in Eastern Congo.
“I want to specially thank former president Uhuru Kenyatta for his efforts to restore peace in Congo. His efforts are part of the reasons we are here today,” the President said, drawing applause from the audience.
Uhuru Kenyatta has been serving as the Facilitator of the EAC-led Nairobi Peace Process, a mandate that has seen him engage rebel groups, regional governments, civil society organizations, and humanitarian agencies in an attempt to end long-running conflict in Eastern DRC. His diplomatic approach, including direct dialogue with various armed groups, has been widely acknowledged by the international community.
The Congolese leader emphasized that Uhuru’s involvement came at a critical moment when tensions, displacement, and violence were escalating. According to him, Uhuru’s mediation created channels for dialogue that had previously seemed impossible, helping to ease pressure in a region troubled by decades of instability.
The moment was notable not only for its praise of Uhuru but also because it unfolded in the presence of Donald Trump—a figure known for his blunt approach to global issues. Many observers interpreted the President’s remarks as a recognition of Kenya’s broader influence in regional peace and diplomacy.
Reactions online have been swift, with Kenyans expressing pride in Uhuru’s international recognition. Others noted that despite political changes at home, the former President continues to be respected abroad for his calm, diplomatic, and consensus-driven leadership style.
Analysts argue that Congo’s public appreciation of Uhuru could strengthen Kenya’s role in African conflict resolution and reinforce the effectiveness of regional peace mechanisms.
